Running Away with the Circus

Lessons of launching your own magazine and event series, how to make it work, what not to do, and how to keep the right attitude and get interesting stuff done against the odds.

Leila Johnston

Leila—pronounced like the Eric Clapton song, not the Futurama character—Johnston lives in Sheffield but her online home is at Final Bullet.

Leila co-hosts a brilliant podcast called Shift Run Stop. If you ever tinkered with a ZX Spectrum or a Commodore 64, you owe it to yourself to give it a listen. You used to be able to buy tapes of past episodes. Yes, cassette tapes.

Leila is an author, blogger, comedy writer, and journalist.

She is also the instigator of Hack Circus, which is simultaneously a magazine and a series of events all about “art, technology and the fascinating ideas that connect them.” Sounds quite dConstructy.

Leila set out to chronicle all the IBM till receipt checkouts in London, which was all good fun until the Daily Mail got hold of it (warning: that’s a link to the Daily Mail).

She’s no stranger to Brighton, having already been here for Improving Reality in 2012 and TEDxBrighton in 2013.
